OpenAI has released a preview version of its ChatGPT desktop application for Linux, extending the service to one of the major desktop platforms that previously lacked an official application.

Linux users have long requested a dedicated ChatGPT desktop experience, particularly among developers and other members of the open-source community.

OpenAI said the Linux launch completes its desktop operating-system coverage for ChatGPT and Codex.

The new application is being distributed globally and gives Linux users access to ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex through a native desktop experience.

At launch, OpenAI is supporting desktop versions of Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44.

Although Linux encompasses hundreds of distributions, these systems serve as foundations for numerous related distributions and desktop variants.
The launch also puts OpenAI closer to competitors that have already moved into the Linux desktop market.

Anthropic introduced a Linux version of its Claude desktop application about a month earlier, supporting Ubuntu 22.04 and newer versions as well as Debian 12 and later releases.

By bringing ChatGPT and Codex to Linux desktops, OpenAI is giving developers and other Linux users a more integrated way to access its AI tools without relying exclusively on a web browser.
