John Jumper, a renowned artificial intelligence researcher and Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry, has announced his departure from Google DeepMind after nearly nine years with the organization. 

The move marks a significant addition to rival AI company Anthropic as competition for top talent intensifies across the artificial intelligence industry.

Jumper revealed the decision in a public statement, expressing gratitude to DeepMind and its leadership for the opportunities he received during his tenure. 

He particularly acknowledged DeepMind Chief Executive Officer Demis Hassabis for entrusting him with leadership responsibilities early in his scientific career.

During his time at DeepMind, Jumper played a pivotal role in the development of AlphaFold, a groundbreaking artificial intelligence system capable of accurately predicting the three-dimensional structures of proteins from genetic sequences. 

The innovation has been widely recognized as a major breakthrough in biological research and drug discovery.

His contributions to AlphaFold earned international acclaim and culminated in the award of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2024, shared with Hassabis.
