Amazon Considers Expanding AI Chip Business to Challenge Industry Leaders

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is exploring plans to sell its proprietary artificial intelligence chips to external customers, a move that could position the company as a more direct competitor to established semiconductor leaders.

The discussions center on Amazon’s Trainium AI chips, which were originally developed to power the company’s cloud-based artificial intelligence services.

Company executives have indicated that demand for the chips has been exceptionally strong, prompting consideration of broader commercial availability.

Amazon believes its custom chip business has the potential to generate tens of billions of dollars annually if expanded beyond internal use.
