A former engineer at artificial intelligence company xAI has filed a lawsuit alleging that he was dismissed after repeatedly raising concerns about the safety and ethical implications of the company’s AI chatbot, Grok. The legal action was filed in a California state court by Devin Kim, who worked at the company until September 2025.

According to court documents, Kim emerged as a strong advocate for AI safety during his time at xAI. He reportedly warned company leadership about potential risks associated with Grok, including the possibility that the chatbot could promote discriminatory content or provide information that could be misused for harmful purposes. The lawsuit claims that these concerns were not adequately addressed by company officials.

The filing highlights several controversies involving Grok after Kim’s departure. Among them were incidents in which the chatbot generated offensive content and later became linked to the spread of non-consensual sexual imagery on social media platform X. Kim’s legal team argues that these events reinforced the concerns he had raised while employed at the company.

The lawsuit further portrays Kim as a whistleblower who sought to ensure compliance with laws relating to consumer protection, internet regulation, and public safety. Interestingly, the complaint does not directly accuse company founder Elon Musk of disregarding safety measures. Instead, it alleges that Kim’s supervisor and xAI co-founder, Jimmy Ba, ignored directives aimed at strengthening safeguards and retaliated against employees who advocated for stricter safety standards.

Kim’s attorneys claim that Ba prioritized the rapid development of advanced AI systems over safety considerations and resisted efforts to implement additional testing and compliance procedures. The lawsuit also alleges that certain regulatory requirements were bypassed during the release of one of the company’s AI models, though those claims have yet to be tested in court.

The former engineer is seeking compensatory and punitive damages, along with a declaration that the actions of xAI and its parent company, SpaceX, were unlawful. Neither organization had publicly responded to the allegations at the time of filing, and the case is expected to draw significant attention as debates over AI governance and corporate accountability continue to intensify worldwide.
