Rivian Announces Delivery Date for Its New Affordable R2 SUV

Last Updated: May 28, 2026By

Electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian has confirmed that deliveries of its highly anticipated R2 sport utility vehicle will begin on June 9.

The announcement marks a major milestone for the company as it seeks to expand beyond its premium R1 lineup and compete more aggressively in the growing electric SUV market.

The R2 is expected to attract a broader customer base due to its lower starting price compared to Rivian’s existing models.

The first trim level will reportedly start at just under $60,000, while the company plans to introduce a standard version priced at approximately $48,490 by 2027.

Rivian has also hinted at an even more affordable variant expected to launch next year with a projected starting price of around $45,000.

The company has maintained that affordability remains a key part of its long-term strategy since first unveiling the R2 in 2024.

Founder and Chief Executive Officer RJ Scaringe described the R2 as one of the most important products Rivian has launched since its establishment.

The automaker is optimistic that the SUV will significantly increase sales volumes and improve its financial position.

Industry analysts believe the R2 could play a vital role in Rivian’s efforts to achieve profitability for the first time since the company was founded in 2009.

Rivian is targeting the delivery of approximately 25,000 units before the end of the year as production ramps up.

The company also hopes the success of the R2 and its upcoming sibling model, the R3 hatchback, will strengthen Rivian’s standing in the increasingly competitive electric vehicle industry.
