Amazon in Talks to Buy Satellite Firm Globalstar for $9 Billion

Last Updated: April 3, 2026By

Amazon is in advanced discussions to buy satellite telecommunications operator Globalstar for about $9 billion. The deal would support Amazon’s push to build its own low‑earth‑orbit (LEO) connectivity network.

The acquisition is seen as a strategic move to accelerate Amazon’s ambitions in broadband and space‑based services, competing more directly with SpaceX’s Starlink network. Analysts say LEO networks could be a major growth area in global connectivity.

Amazon plans to integrate Globalstar’s existing satellite fleet with future low‑earth satellites to deliver wider and higher‑speed coverage. This could improve services for rural customers and enterprise clients worldwide.

Regulators are expected to scrutinise the deal closely given the critical role of satellite communications in national infrastructure. Spectrum rights and international licensing will be major considerations in the approval process.

If completed, the transaction could reshape the satellite telecom market and give Amazon a platform to expand both consumer and enterprise broadband offerings in the coming decade.
