Air France‑KLM Makes Strategic Bid for TAP Air Portugal
Air France-KLM has submitted a non‑binding offer to acquire a minority stake in TAP Air Portugal as part of the Portuguese government’s privatisation push.
The offer positions the Franco‑Dutch carrier to expand its reach through TAP’s strategic Lisbon hub.
Portugal intends to sell a 44.9 % stake to a strategic partner able to enhance global connectivity. Air France‑KLM’s bid follows initial interest shown by Lufthansa and IAG, presenting a competitive process.
Executives say the deal could strengthen operations in key long‑haul markets, especially routes between Europe, Africa and the Americas. Lisbon’s geographic position is seen as a valuable asset for network expansion.
Privatisation supporters argue that private sector expertise could help modernise TAP and improve profitability. However, critics worry about job security and national control over the carrier.
The outcome of the privatisation process will be closely watched by industry analysts as a test case for airline consolidation amid global economic uncertainty.
