Publisher Withdraws ‘Shy Girl’ Amid Allegations of AI-Generated Content

Last Updated: March 23, 2026By

Hachette Book Group has halted the publication of the novel Shy Girl following concerns that artificial intelligence may have been used in its creation.
The book, which was scheduled for release in the United States, has also been withdrawn from circulation in the United Kingdom, where it had already become available.

The decision follows growing speculation from readers and reviewers who questioned the authenticity of the writing. Discussions across online platforms raised doubts about whether the text had been generated using AI tools, prompting further scrutiny from both the public and media outlets.
Author Mia Ballard has denied using artificial intelligence, attributing the issue to an external editor involved in revising the earlier self-published version of the work.

She stated that she is pursuing legal action and described the situation as deeply damaging to her personal and professional reputation.
Industry observers note that such controversies highlight broader challenges in publishing, particularly as AI-generated content becomes more sophisticated. The case has renewed discussions about editorial responsibility and the need for stricter verification processes.
