Veteran NPR Broadcaster Files Lawsuit Over AI Voice Allegedly Modeled After Him

Last Updated: February 16, 2026By Tags: , ,

David Greene, the longtime host of NPR’s Morning Edition, has filed a lawsuit againsle, alleging that an AI-generated voice used in the company’s NotebookLM tool closely resembles his own. The case was first reported by The Washington Post.

Greene claims the voice mirrors his cadence, intonation, and habitual speech patterns, prompting friends and colleagues to alert him to the similarity.

He argues that his voice is a defining element of his professional identity and was replicated without consent.

NotebookLM allows users to generate podcast-style audio summaries using AI hosts.

Google has denied the allegations, stating that the voice in question was created using a paid professional voice actor and is not based on Greene.

The dispute adds to a growing list of legal and ethical conflicts surrounding AI-generated voices.

In a previous high-profile case, Scarlett Johansson raised concerns over a ChatGPT voice that she said closely imitated her own, prompting its removal.

As generative audio tools become more widespread, the case could help define the boundaries of voice rights in the age of artificial intelligence.
