TikTok and Snap Settle Social Media Addiction Lawsuit as Others Head to Trial

Last Updated: January 30, 2026By

TikTok has reached a settlement in a high-profile lawsuit alleging that social media platforms intentionally design addictive products that harm users.
Snap, another defendant in the case, reached a settlement last week, while Meta and YouTube are proceeding to trial.

The lawsuit centers on a 19-year-old plaintiff identified by the initials K.G.M. and is considered a test case for a wave of similar legal actions against major social media companies. Jury selection for the trial involving Meta and YouTube is scheduled to begin shortly.

High-profile executives, including Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and YouTube chief Neal Mohan, are expected to testify during the proceedings.
Legal experts say the outcome could influence how future cases involving social media addiction are handled in court.

By settling, TikTok and Snap have not admitted wrongdoing, but have chosen to resolve the matter outside the courtroom. The terms of the settlements have not been publicly disclosed.

The case highlights growing scrutiny of social media platforms and their impact on young users, as regulators and courts increasingly examine the design choices behind digital engagement and online behavior.
