Google Expands AI-Driven Photo Editing in Google Photos to New Global Markets

Last Updated: January 29, 2026By

Google has expanded its artificial intelligence–powered photo editing capabilities, rolling out its prompt-based editing feature to users in India, Australia and Japan. The move allows more people to edit images using simple text instructions rather than traditional editing tools, marking another step in Google’s broader AI rollout.

The feature enables users to describe desired photo changes in natural language through a “Help me Edit” prompt within the Google Photos app. Instead of adjusting sliders or navigating complex menus, users can type commands such as removing unwanted background objects, reducing blur, or restoring old photographs.

Google’s AI technology also supports more advanced edits, including altering facial expressions, removing accessories like glasses, or correcting closed eyes in photos. These edits are powered by the company’s Nano Banana image model, with processing carried out directly on the device, eliminating the need for an active internet connection during editing.

The editing tool is available on Android devices running Android 8.0 or higher with at least 4GB of RAM, extending access beyond Google’s Pixel phones. In addition, Google has introduced support for multiple regional languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali and Gujarati, improving accessibility for millions of users.

Google is also introducing C2PA Content Credentials in supported regions, allowing users to see whether an image was created or modified using AI. The update reflects Google’s continued push to integrate AI across Google Photos, following recent launches such as AI-powered search, artistic photo templates and meme creation tools.
