Europol Dismantles Major Crypto-Mixing Platform Used To Clean €1.3b In Illicit Funds
European law enforcement authorities, working under the coordination of Europol, have dismantled a major cryptocurrency-mixing platform implicated in large-scale money laundering operations. The service, known as Cryptomixer, was taken offline following a joint operation that targeted its infrastructure and financial assets.
In a statement released Monday, Europol described Cryptomixer as a preferred laundering tool for cybercriminal networks, enabling the concealment of proceeds from crimes including drug and arms trafficking, ransomware attacks, and payment card fraud.
Investigators revealed that from 2016 to date, the platform played a central role in laundering an estimated €1.3 billion worth of Bitcoin. Crypto-mixing services operate by blending digital funds from multiple users, making it far more difficult for authorities to trace the origin and movement of the assets on public blockchains such as Bitcoin and Ethereum.
During the operation, officials seized €25 million in Bitcoin, three servers, 12 terabytes of stored data, and the platform’s official domain, cryptomixer.io, which has now been replaced with a law enforcement seizure notice.
Europol noted that Cryptomixer’s systems enabled ransomware groups, dark-web marketplaces, and illegal online forums to mask their financial tracks. The service operated by pooling deposits from different users for extended, randomized periods before redistributing them to new wallet addresses, effectively disrupting traceability.
The agency added that the platform also offered anonymity features that allowed cybercriminals to “clean” their funds before moving them to legitimate cryptocurrency exchanges or converting them to other crypto assets or fiat currencies.
Authorities have in recent years intensified crackdowns on crypto-mixing services. Previous high-profile targets include Tornado Cash and ChipMixer, both accused of enabling large-scale cryptocurrency laundering schemes.
