OpenAI’s Sora Ranks No. 3 on U.S. App Store Within 48 Hours of Launch

OpenAI’s new AI video app, Sora, has made a remarkable debut on the U.S. App Store, securing the No. 3 position in the overall app rankings just two days after its release.

Despite being invite-only and limited to users in the United States and Canada, Sora recorded 56,000 downloads on its first day and amassed a total of 164,000 installs by October 1, according to figures from app intelligence company Appfigures.

The app’s early performance has drawn comparisons with other major AI app launches. While ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini both exceeded 80,000 downloads on their opening day, Sora’s numbers still placed it alongside xAI’s Grok and significantly ahead of Anthropic’s Claude (21,000 downloads) and Microsoft’s Copilot (7,000 downloads).

Appfigures’ analysis focused on U.S. and Canadian markets for fairness highlighted that while Sora did not surpass the strongest AI app debuts, its invite-only restriction suggests its growth potential could be even greater if made widely available.

By its second day, Sora’s popularity pushed it into the top three overall apps on the U.S. App Store. For context, ChatGPT climbed to No. 1 within two days of its release, Grok peaked at No. 4, Gemini at No. 6, Copilot at No. 19, and Claude at No. 78.

The strong launch underscores growing demand for AI-powered video applications, positioning Sora as a key player in the rapidly expanding market for consumer AI tools.
