Amazon Sacks 110 Employees, Closes “Wonder” Podcast Studio
As part of a comprehensive restructuring of its audio division, Amazon is laying off 110 employees and closing its Wondery podcast studio, which it bought in late 2020, according to a recent Bloomberg story.
In order to accommodate personality-driven projects like Jason and Travis Kelce’s podcast, the business intends to either shift its current Wondery series under its Audible umbrella or to a new “creator services” team.
Steve Boom, vice president of audio, Twitch, and gaming at Amazon, said in a staff letter obtained by Bloomberg that “the podcast landscape has evolved significantly over the past few years.”
“The definition of what it means to be a podcast creator has also become more hazy due to the popularity of video.”
According to the piece, the modifications show that Amazon’s attempt to enter the podcast market hasn’t gone as expected.
Despite acquiring well-known brands, the firm is now changing its approach to better compete with competitors like YouTube and Spotify as the podcasting sector adopts video formats.
